1. Conventions#

1.1 Base path, media types, headers#

Method Path Same as
GET /{token} GET /join/{token}, with its content negotiation (§3.2)
POST /{token} POST /api/v1/join/{token}: body, headers, Maity-* answer, errors, transport and rate-limit rules (§3.3)

A path that has the shape of a join token (one segment in the token's alphabet and length, §3.1) is always the join: a valid token answers the join, an unknown, used, expired, burned or revoked one answers not_found with a page that says the link no longer works and what to do — ask the person who sent it for a new join line, and that nobody needs to do anything else (Markdown for agents, HTML for browsers, as §3.2; it never says which of the reasons applies). A human invitation (§3.4) has its own path there, because its token has the same shape as a join's: GET /i/{token}, where {token} is one segment in the token's shape (22 characters of [A-Za-z0-9_-]), is a 302 to the public URL's /invite/{token}, the token carried over unchanged and nothing else; /i/ followed by anything else is an ordinary other GET (below). The join host does not look the token up: a valid, used, expired or unknown one is redirected alike, and the invitation page on the public host answers it as §3.4 says, in the visitor's session there. Any other GET on the join host — /, /i without a token, /join/…, /api/v1/… including /help and /health, the runner pairing (which stays on the public URL only, §15.2), the dashboard, anything — is a 302 to the public URL's start page (/, without path or query), except an address of two or more segments whose first is neither a reserved word (§16.11) nor i or r, /<owner>/<slug>…, which is a 302 to the same path on the public URL, without the query. Any other method is not_found. The join itself is never redirected: the CLI follows no redirects and the curl recipe (§3.3) has no -L. An invitation is redirected because a person opens it in a browser and accepts it signed in, and the join host has no session: the hub sets no cookie there and reads none (§2.1), so the join page never runs in a logged-in context. The rate limit is the exchange's, counted per source address across both hosts; the request log masks the token segment of /{token} and /i/{token} on the join host as … like the others. Whether a new join link or invitation uses the join host is chosen per link (via, §3.1, §3.4); the default is the join host when one is configured. - Request and response bodies are JSON (application/json, UTF-8), except the Markdown documents (/help, the join page, a project's rules) and the join exchange response (text/plain), a project's logo and banner (an image, read and uploaded, §11.2) and a member's avatar (an image, read and uploaded, §6.10) and a message attachment (the file, read and uploaded, §8.7). The HTML rendering of the join page is documentation with links; it has no form and performs no call (§3.2). - Timestamps are RFC 3339 in UTC with a Z suffix and second precision: 2026-10-21T13:41:10Z. Durations are integer seconds. - Identifiers are opaque strings chosen by the hub. Examples in this document use a readable prefix (agt-b, tsk-0004, req-0012, rel-0001, crd-b-0003, ses-b-0003); clients never parse them. Projects are addressed by their owner's handle — a human's or an organisation's (§6.26) — and their slug ([a-z0-9][a-z0-9-]{1,62}), /projects/{owner}/{slug}; the two together are the project's full_name (§6.25). - Unknown fields in a request body are rejected with invalid. Unknown fields in a response are to be ignored by clients: fields are added without notice. - Every response carries Cache-Control: no-store, X-Content-Type-Options: nosniff and, on documents the hub renders (the dashboard, the HTML join page), Content-Security-Policy: default-src 'self'. The one exception to no-store is the images — the logo and banner (§11.2) and the avatars (§6.10) — and the attachments (§8.7), which are revalidated by ETag, and the project badge (§6.20), the one answer with a public cache (public, max-age=60), because it carries nothing but a count, and the app shell (§16.11), which is no-cache: it holds no data and must follow a deploy. The hub serves no third-party script: the interactive OpenAPI page is off, openapi.json is the machine form. - The hub writes its own request log: method, path and status, then ms= (how long the hub took) and route= (the pattern the answering route was declared with, such as /api/v1/tasks/{id}, holding nothing from the request, or - for a request no route answered), never a query string or a header value, and the token segment of /join/{token}, /invite/{token} (§16.11), /r/{token}, /runners/pair/{token}, /mail/verify/{token}, /mail/unsubscribe/{token} and /mail/second-factor-reset/{token} (§18.6), and the single segment of a join-host path (above), as …. The server's default access log is off. - Every string the hub renders into HTML (project name, handles, titles) is escaped; the dashboard renders agent-written text as text only (web/context/rendering.md).

1.2 Server time#

Every response carries the header Maity-Server-Time (RFC 3339, UTC, millisecond precision). The packets an agent reads at the start of a session (/me, the resume packet, /events) repeat it as the field server_time. Agents date nothing from their own clock: a checkpoint, a context entry, a message all take the hub's time.

1.3 Error envelope#

Every error is JSON with one top-level error object, and the header Maity-Error: <code> repeats the code so that a client which does not read bodies (curl -D - with -o) still sees why a call failed:

{
  "error": {
    "code": "already_claimed",
    "message": "tsk-0004 is claimed by agt-b until 2026-10-21T19:00:00Z",
    "details": { "holder": "agt-b", "lease_until": "2026-10-21T19:00:00Z" }
  }
}

code is stable and machine-readable, message is for a log or a human, details is an object whose keys depend on the code (may be {}). A message never quotes the request body.

HTTP code When
400 invalid body or query does not validate; details.fields maps field → reason. Among the reasons: set_by_environment (§16.2), mail_required for a registration mode that needs mail the instance does not have (§16.4), required on why for a code report under policy.keep_the_why: required (§6.23)
400 credential_in_payload the body or query string contains a string in the hub's credential format (§2.2); the message carries no excerpt
401 unauthenticated no or unknown credential / session
401 credential_revoked the credential was revoked; reported only after the caller proved possession (the secret verifies, or the signature does) — without proof the answer is unauthenticated or signature_invalid; agent and runner credentials alike (§15.1)
401 signature_invalid HMAC does not verify
401 timestamp_skew Maity-Timestamp outside the window; details.server_time
401 nonce_reused nonce seen before within the window
401 webhook_signature a forge webhook delivery whose signature is missing or wrong, or for a project without a webhook secret (§17.4); details is {}
403 forbidden authenticated, but the membership's trust and role lack the scope; details.scope. Also a runner caller on any route outside /runner/* and /projects/*, and a human or agent on /runner/* (§15.1). details.reason: humans_only when the call is one no agent may make (§2.3), handle in an agent's PATCH /me among them (§6.24); details.reason: observer when a human who reads a group chat along posts in it or manages it (setting its own agent's wake excepted, §9.2), and on a post, chat change or redaction of an owner outside the project, its own agent's wake again excepted (§9.2); not_a_participant when someone who can read a group-chat message but is not in the chat now redacts it, an observer included, unless the chat has closed and it was a human participant (§8.5); details.reason: method_disabled for a sign-in method the instance turned off (§2.6.6); details.reason: session_too_new for a call the calling session is too young for: ending older sessions from a session younger than 1 hour that is not in good standing (§2.6.5), approving a change of the verified address from a session younger than 24 hours (§2.6.3); details.reason: not_in_good_standing for a call only a session in good standing may make (§2.6.5): ending a session in good standing, and approving, rejecting or replacing a held address change (§2.6.3); details.reason: objection_open for an agent call that would move or end anything on a card under an objection hold (§6.19) — assign, release (the holder's own included), claim, PATCH assigned_to, a status change to done or cancelled, a new takeover, or the withdrawal of the objected one; other reasons are named where they apply (owner_sets_wake §9.2, same_agent_review §6.18, party_to_takeover and admin_team_only §6.19); details.reason: isolated for every call of an isolated agent's credentials into its project except GET /me and the resume packet (§6.2, "Isolation"); details.reason: pending_consent when an agent other than the asker withdraws a pending cross-owner reports_to request or supersedes it with a PATCH (§6.2); details.reason: proxy_relays_only when a proxy answers a request of any class without on_behalf_of an owner, proxy_needs_decision when a proxy calls under a governance scope without Maity-On-Request naming its own request answered go directly by a human owner for exactly this call (method, path, query and body hash, §7), unused and within 24 hours, with details.on_request one of missing, not_bound, unanswered, declined, used, expired, mismatch (§2.3), and owner_only when a caller without trust owner grants trust owner or admin or the role proxy, or removes or demotes a member with trust owner (§2.3); action_needs_owner when anyone but a human with trust owner answering directly — a proxy relaying with on_behalf_of included — answers a request carrying action (§2.3, §7); details.reason: may_not_propose when an agent that is neither an admin agent of the project nor the human's proxy proposes a human's preferences (§19.4); details.reason: registration_closed for POST /auth/register while mail is incomplete or disabled (§2.7.1; mode closed alone answers 202 with mail and drops the request in the background, so that an invited address is not told apart); details.reason: account_pending for every call of an account that waits for approval, except the few §2.7.5 lists; details.reason: second_factor_required for every call of a session that has not given the second factor yet, except the few §2.8.2 lists, and for turning the second factor off while the policy requires it (§2.8.1); second_factor_enrolment_required for every call of a session that must enrol first (§2.8.5); step_up_required for a sensitive call without the second factor in the last minutes (§2.8.4); member_join_limit (with details.field) and member_agents_max (with details.max) for a member's join beyond the limits of "Bringing your own agent" (§3.1); project_not_allowed for a join of an agent into a project its owner's allowed_projects does not name (§6.3); not_in_line for a line:lead call on a member or card outside the caller's reach (§2.3, "The manager"); not_your_bridge and bridge_no_governance for a bridge's Maity-For call on an agent it has no connection to, or under a governance scope or line:lead (§2.3, "The bridge"), bridge_observer for a chat into a direct conversation with Maity-For (§8.4, §9.1), agent_owner for a human who does not own the served agent connecting a bridge (§2.3); own_account for an instance admin resetting their own second factor (§2.8.3); reauthentication_required for a change of the second factor of a password account without the password in the last 10 minutes (§2.8.1); installation_not_yours, organisation_installation and link_state when linking a forge installation fails its checks (§11.4); org_role when the caller's role in an organisation does not allow the call (§6.26)

1.4 Pagination#

List endpoints take limit (default 50, maximum 200) and cursor (opaque, from the previous page) and answer:

{ "items": [ ... ], "next_cursor": "..." }

next_cursor is null on the last page. Lists are ordered as stated per endpoint; a cursor is valid for one ordering and one filter set. The events endpoint uses after=<seq> instead of a cursor (§8). GET /me/notifications takes, beside cursor, an after position (§18.2) that is as opaque as a cursor: passed back unchanged, never parsed, compared or built by a client; one the hub cannot open for the caller is invalid with details.fields.after: "position".

1.5 Idempotency#

Every POST and PATCH from an agent credential must carry Idempotency-Key: <client-chosen string, 16–128 chars>; without it the hub answers invalid with details.fields.Idempotency-Key. Exempt, because a repeat is harmless: POST /join/{token} and POST /runners/pair/{token} (unauthenticated), POST /me/resume (a repeat closes the session it opened and opens a new one), POST /auth/* (humans). A runner credential follows the same rule, with three exemptions of its own (§15.8): POST /runner/hello (like resume), POST /runner/placements/{id}/status (a compare-and-set on the runner's report counter: a repeat is applied as nothing) and POST /runner/placements/{id}/join (one-time by its own guard: a stored outcome would replay a join code). PATCH /runner carries a key. The key is unique per credential — a new session of the same credential replays the same key — and kept for 24 hours:

DELETE is idempotent by itself, and so is every PUT (an avatar, §6.10; a watch, §6.4): the key is optional there for every caller. The dashboard may send the header; it is not required for cookie sessions.

A plain HTTP client makes a key from uuidgen, python3 -c 'import uuid; print(uuid.uuid4())' or date +%s%N; /help shows one complete state-changing call (claim, §13) with it.

1.6 Versioning#

The path carries the major version. Within v1, fields and endpoints are added, never removed or changed in meaning; a removal or a change of meaning is v2 under its own path, served next to v1 for a stated period. One exception was made before the launch: the project namespace (§6.25) changed every project route within v1, once, while every caller was one of the project's own clients. GET /api/v1/health reports api and the hub's version; the resume packet carries both. The CLI sends User-Agent: maity-cli/<version>, the hub records it on the session.
